March 16th The UEA

The UEA
This afternoon, I went for a walk with my new friend Sam to and around the lake at the UEA (University of East Anglia) and back. We started our walk following a river leading to the lake and it was very muddy for the most part. Navigating the mud was part of the fun though. The river passes under a road bridge and takes us along the backs of houses with their riverside gardens. At this moment in time, it feels like a step back to winter with dull light, very little bird activity and of course, mud, lots and lots of mud! The landscape seems rather sleepy and quiet today.

A wooden boardwalk then appears and replaces the mud. Just like a red carpet, it leads us straight to the lake and the looming ziggurat buildings of the UEA. We made a loop around the lake, hearing the yaffling calls of green woodpeckers as well as the calls of great spotted woodpeckers, too. Long-tailed tits and treecreepers were teasing us with glimpses, while a mixture of gulls and corvids probe the grassy field between the lake and the UEA buildings for earthworms and scraps of dropped food. The lake itself didn't have much activity on it other than more gulls and a great crested grebe. However, the real surprise of the walk was hearing someone playing a bagpipe on the opposite side of the lake as we were about to head back towards the muddy path to leave!
